The late A.P.HERBERT [writer, humorist, member of parliament, writer of 'musicals'incl:THE WATER GYPSIES, etc...] says in autobiography that he and a friend [I've forgotten who!] originally wrote this song. He was much amused when people told him of this great song that they'd found and then sang him HIS OWN SONG. Said he was delighted that it sounded 'authentic' enough to 'pass' as a trad.folksong.
