Of his three children, only his daughter is still alive. He lost one son to Cerebral Palsy and another due to a drug overdose.As with most of his generation he didn't advertise the charity work he did, but I know he was very active. I think his comedy was a mask, hiding painful memories of his own childhood.
His humour was polished and tho' he appeared "smooth" or "slick" he was master of his art and that doesn't happen overnight or by accident, he worked hard and deserves all the credit he's getting.
