What makes this song so special to me is that it comes directly from his own experiences as a soldier with the 51st Highlanders. The poignancy of leaving a place that has been both harsh with war yet friendly and welcoming as well is beautifully captured. The tune is maybe second only to Roslin Castle in my list of sad melodies.
