Strikes me that there are some interesting questions to be asked here and some underlying assumptions to be challenged. My first thought is how a picture by an Italian painter of High Renaissance fits so well into the wider scheme of English Culture that it should sit in the English National Gallery? Would it not be better in an Italian Gallery? What exactly (besides from value) is its relevance? If it is a work of international stature does it matter which gallery it is hung? I'd be interested to know who decides what "must be saved for the Nation" and on what basis. SM
