Irvine used to have a decent festival (Marymass) in August. In the 1970s I won the Arthur Argo Cup there for traditional singing, engraved as it was with the names of the likes of Dick Gaughan and the aforesaid Mary Stewart. To my eternal shame the trophy wasn't there to present to the following year's winner on the day as I was skint and had no transport until the day after. wr
