In the 1930's my father occasionally sang snatches of a tune which today I realise
must have been "Pretty Redwing". The lyrics however, made reference to the
Dardanelles campaign of the the 1st World War------ and went something like this:-

Oh, the moon shines down tonight on Charlie Chaplin.
His boots are crackling from want of blackening
And his long baggy trousers they need mending,
Before they send him to the Dardanelles
