The instrument is surely not as important as what is done with it. I may have mentioned this here before, but I am reminded of the response by Chinua Achebe when criticised for writing in English rather than one of the many languages of his native Nigeria. He pointed to the fact that African slaves and their descendants in America took Western instruments and created a new musical form, i.e. jazz. wr.
