I reckon Jean Phillips' second theory is closest. It was a royal court fashion in the 16th Century to dance 'al morisco', i.e. in the moorish style. No-one pretends it was meant to be an exact or even close replica of Moorish dancing, whatever that was. Just having drums, whistles and bells was probably enough. |
