JudeL Cambridge Folk Festival 2004 (45) RE: Cambridge Folk Festival 2004 29 Jul 04

Some 20 odd years ago when I was still at uni, I went to Cambridge FF. It was rather smaller (it was still all on one site) and the lineup was virtually all performers that called themselves folk. It was the first folk festival I'd ever been to & I had no idea what to expect. Apart from the stuff onstage around the campsite there seemed to be lots of little groups gathering & making music. I loved it.

Having left uni, moved further away & generally got involved in other things it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I went back to Cambridge FF again. Although I enjoyed it, only by a major stretch of the imagination could most of the music be termed folk. The performers included blues, jazz, rock, bluegrass, skiffle & and some "world" music. Most of what could be termed folk was in the club tent. I am not suggesting it was a bad festival merely that it appeared to have changed from a folk festival to a live music festival, and it was as such I enjoyed it.

For the rest: the beer was ok, the hot spiced cider very moreish, the loos were typical overworked portaloos, some batches of which were better than others, and the space for camping strictly limited and allocated.

The thing about not being allowed to deliver camping gear to the site by car I did not experience as I was there as a facilitator to a friend with a disability and thus we were allowed to unload fairly close to where we were to be camped.

It was my impression that it was very much a concert type festival it seemed to have almost no participatory element and since it was all on site there was NO fringe. Also, & this is the bit I did miss, there appeared to be very little spontaneous music or song, it was the official concerts or nothing. I don't know if that's typical of other years or not I can only go by what I experienced on the site I was camped.

I have not gone since as most years it's timing conflicts with Sidmouth & for me fringe events are much more fun. But if that's the type of festival you like go & enjoy.
