There lived in bonny Scotland
An old man named MacDougall
He could play Annie Laurie
On the bagpipe, harp, or bugle
His second cousin, Ben,
Twice removed on mother's side,
Came one time to visit
For a week at Eastertide

This Ben came from America,
A little place called Maine
Where the winters are all snow and ice
Instead of fog and rain
And when Ben had a pint or two
And his tongue was getting loose
He'd tell the Scotsmen stories about
How we hunt the moose

"Well we shoot one in the autumn
When the leaves are off the trees
Haul him home with a tractor
And pack the meat to freeze"
The Scotsman cried "I've heard enuf,

Tae see gin this American moose
Can make a daicent stew!"

His friends and all his neighbors,
There was nothing they could say
He travelled to America
Before the end of May
And when he gets to Ben's house
Says "Noo dinna think me douce,
But gin ye wudna mind
I want tae see the American moose!"

"That could be dangerous my friend

But the Scot was not dissuaded,
He would see one if he could
So early the next morning
They both set out through the wood

And they searched for many hours
Before they saw a sign
Then tracks the size of dinnerplates
Were there beneath the pine
And then, right there in front of them,
Before a word was said
Was a beastie like a Clydesdale
But with antlers on his head

But the Scot could not be seen
He was leggin' it for all his might
Right back the way they'd been
"Thank ye, Ben!" MacDougall cried
Just as he lost his hat,
"Gin that's a moose, I dinna think
I want tae see the cat"
