The blog discussing the introduction of Shariah law into a province (Ontario) doesn't have it quite right -- in fact, it's hysterical and silly. Many provinces in Canada provide for cultural laws to be used in the case of civil disputes, if such use does not contravene the laws of the province or of Canada. For instance, native cultures in many provinces have their own ways of dealing with such issues as land disputes, divorce settlements, and so on. Ontario is simply considering granting the same rights to Muslims. In divorce cases especially, where the rights of either party would normally be negotiated by a lawyer, either a Muslim lawyer or an imam would negotiate, and it would have to be with the agreement of both parties. Muslim women are decrying the use of Sharia law in divorce cases, as it is traditionally anti-female, so the whole matter will probably not become an issue. But it is not a case of the incursion of Islamic law here any more than it would be the incursion of one of our traditional first nations religions.
