In Ottawa, most men who have to wear "business attire" (suit & tie with polished oxfords) in winter also wear galoshes -- i.e., rubber or rubberized nylon zippered boots that pull over their shoes. I haven't seen female-type galoshes since the early 1960s, when my granny wore a darling pair with silk ties and fox fur around the tops. The only time I have ever had the pleasure of galoshes was during my seven years in the Canadian Forces, which used to issue sturdy rubber overshoes for wear with combat boots in cold, wet conditions such as any typical winter day in the Atlantic provinces. The combination of combat boot + combat overboot came to something like seven pounds of footwear per foot. Great for developing leg muscle; lousy for practically anything else -- although your feet were dry. As for ear-muffs -- I WEAR EARMUFFS! Mink ones that Edmund gave me for Christmas. Just the thing when the wind is down and the still air temperature hovers around -10C, which is just a little too balmy for the all-encompassing Official Winter Hat but still cold enough to produce serious pain in the tips of my ears, which were frostbitten years ago and never quite got over it.
