Bert, good assessments. However, what about "The Nightmare Song" from Iolanthe (Gilbert and Sullivan)? Can the audience leave humming it? Or maybe a Stephen Sondheim song? Or even a Jerome Kern song such as "All The Things You Are"? And yet these are memorable, create pictures and appeal to some listeners. What makes a song appeal to listeners? What makes it memorable? How do you create pix in the minds of the beholders? Aside from polling the size of audience appreciation, what makes a song entertaining? Why do some songs turn one audience on and another off?
