Anne M - you'l find that about 90% of the songs in the world are done with three chords - so you're stuck! In addition to adding the relative minors you can put bass (or treble) runs leading from one chord to the next. Also you might start trying flatpicking - it may take a while, but being able to pick a lead or an improvised variation will add a lot to those basic three chords.
