WOW!! Coal miners using carbide lamps???? And here is me thinking that nobody would forget what happens when a flame gets near firedamp! Methane is a problem in coal faces due to rotting down of organic compounds...... that is why Sir Humphry Davy is famous for ;-] However in the good old days of the theater the front of the stage had a series of lights where jets of flame were played onto pieces of limestone causing them to glow white, hence the term "grabbing the limelight" . (also "upstageing" somebody)
