Probably not quite the same, but a buddy & I have a tradition of kayaking on a local bay on Christmas. (Tomales Bay, right along the San Andreas fault, just south of Half Moon Bay which was made famous in Hitchcock's "The Birds" - central California, USA) No ice in the waters 'round here though. Rarely even frost on the grass.
