GUEST,Ooh-Aah2 BS: Swear allegiance to the Crown? (48) RE: BS: Swear alligance to the Crown? 18 Feb 06

I have no problems at all swearing allegiance to the Queen, as what was once a literal pledge to an idividual is now clearly an oath to uphold the moderate and democratic countries and traditions she symbolically embodies. Apart from that I have great respect for her as a person, and an even greater respect (and affection) for her son, the future King. Now Edward the VIII, that would be a different matter, symbolism or not!
