Among the Pennsylvania Dutch in the community where I grew up, their spin on the whole pancakes-on-Shrove-Tuesday concept was something called Fastnacht Day. (Fastnachts being a type of homemade, hole-less, yeast-raised donut, only eaten hot and with syrup like American pancakes.)

The idea's likely familiar: "get all the rich cooking ingredients out of the house before Lent!"
