GUEST,Commander Crabbe Folk Music in Lerwick (34) RE: Folk Music in Lerwick 31 Mar 06

I remember way back in 1976 when I stayed in a B&B in Main Street Lerwick. The old lady (Cant remember her name) saw I had my guitar with me and invited me to a ceilidh she was having one night saying I was welcome to join in. Thinking it would be a huge affair I went along. It was in fact a small session consisting of a piano player, an accordianist and two fiddlers. (They were really good!) So being a little bit lubricated! I launched into a couple of songs during the night and generally enjoyed the experience. The two fiddlers turned out to be Tom Anderson and Aly Bain! During the evening they played a beautiful tune which to my memory was called either Magister or Mangaster Voe. I never heard it since or found reference to it (Probably due to the drink affecting my understanding of the name I was told!!!) If anyone knows the tune or something with a similar name I would appreciate it.

PS: The best session I ever had in Shetland was on the friday night ferry which was bringing all the musicians up for the festival week.

Chris
