Unless I've missed it, no-one has said that this is the tune of the north Ulster song "The Banks of the Bann." It's a mystery to me how it became known as Slane. My late friend, Jim Moore, arranged "Be thou my vision" for the Irish Presbyterian Hymnal, and I was under that impression that it was he who made the marriage of Eleanor Hull's words and a version of the tune he had collected in north Antrim. However, this is not Gospel and I need to look at the publishing history of the hymn. He said that he had had to omit one note to obtain a metrical fit.
