Howard Kaplan Tech: Windows XP Home versus MIDI (33) RE: Tech: Windows XP Home versus MIDI 10 Apr 06

Using Google, I found a number of references to Crystal SoundFusion. This page offers drivers and installation instructions.

Many inexpensive sound cards provide sounds that meet the General MIDI standards but don't sound very good. For example, the oboe will sound more like an oboe than like a piano but not really like either one. However, if your computer has enough speed and memory, you can get good freeware software MIDI playback tools that don't rely on your sound card's MIDI implementation -- instead, they generate the same kind of information found in .wav files and play that back through the sound card, using large libraries of sampled real sounds. Here's a very brief overview of a combination that works for me, providing output from Noteworthy Composer: MIDIYoke to create a virtual MIDI connection between software modules (that is, to connect NWC to VTSHost), VSTHost to receive MIDI information and to host plugins, the sfz sound font player plugin, and the Unison sound font to be played by the plugin. This is much less information than you need to actually make this work, but it will get you started if you want or need to invest a few hours in the solution. I regret that this is not the right time in my life for me to write the two-page document that would provide more details on this setup.
