The researchers used radiocarbon dating to figure out the ages of the tree rings and learned that the eruption was between 1627BC and 1600BC. This is a century earlier than some archaeologists had thought. 27 years is quite a substantial chunk of a century. I'm not convinced by the Guardian article, but I'm sure it's poorly reported.
