My brother, who works at the Maine Maritime museum, just gave me a cassette of "Pirate Legends" which contains a dramatization of Dixey Bull's story. It was put out by an organization called the Colonial Radio Theater in North Reading MA circa 1997.
He warned me that it was bogus and he was right.
They have him as being from a settlement called Penobscot and describe it as being a full-fledged town with a tavern called the Rusty Nail. I don't think so...I do not know of any settlement calle Penobscot. Then, when he attacks Pemaquid, they have him plundering the church for its gold and silver.. Ummm... wrong. Not likely at that time in that place.Though they did, historically have a tavern, run by a man named John Earthy.
Anyway, this may be where the connection with Penobscot was made.
having fun

Julia
