According to information from the California Death Index, Grace was born in New York, September 22, 1890 (the 1900 Census gives her a July 1889 birth in Illinois). She was the daughter of Samuel and Celia Libovitch. Samuel was a Russian immigrant who came to the United States in 1886. By 1900 Samuel's family was in Elgin, IL where he worked as a tailor. Grace and her siblings attended the Elgin public schools where, according to one report, they "were unusually capable and persevering in their studies." Within a few years the family moved to Chicago, and at the urging of his children Samuel changed the family name to "Leboy." In 1909 Grace achieved her first fame, selling the copyright to a hit composition she had written with Gus Kahn "I Wish I Had A Girl" for $10,000. Supposedly that was the highest price ever paid for one song. Grace married Gus and died in Los Angeles Co., CA May 24, 1983.
