I never heard a recording of this song, until just today I did a search on the internet, and it didn't sound as good as I expected. When I first learned the song from friends, about 40 years ago, they were singing it to the tune of "Sweet Betsy From Pike," and it sounded great. That is a waltz melody, and it fits this song nicely.
