Wordsmith Obit: Meredith Grey? (TV show character) (36) RE: Obit: Meredith Grey? (TV show character) 19 Feb 07

I wrote a blog about this on another site right after I'd finished watching it...I called it: Is Grey's Anatomy Jumping the Shark? The latter refers to an episode of Happy Days in which Fonzie literally jumped a shark with his motorcycle...it was an attempt to boost the ratings, which failed miserably. Gee, wonder why? Since then, any time a television series goes a little wacky trying stunts, like supposedly killing off the main titled character, TV critics call it "jumping the shark."

I thought it was outrageous that they continued this arc past the second episode and now into a third. Just to clear something up, the two guys that Meredith Grey sees "in the white light" are Denny, her housemate's dead fiance and the fireman, whose name escapes me, who saved Meredith's life by taking over for her hand which was in the dumb war re-enacter's body holding the live bombshell that was in his abdomen, and then he wound up getting killed when it went off. (Apologies to those who haven't a clue what this series is all about...it does sound strange in the retelling.)

This is a popular show. I can't imagine what the writers are thinking by going down this route. It has ruined the show's credibility, in my estimation, especially, by having every available surgeon either in the room trying to save Meredith, who, I agree, may not be dead since she's hypothermic...btw, why aren't they warming her?...or just outside the room grieving over her dilemma. Meanwhile, who's saving the ferryboat's victims? Why? Why? Why? I don't even know if I want to watch on Thursday. I compared her "white light experience" to Tony Soprano's frequent dream episodes...which also stretched the limits of verisimilitude.
