Yes, that was it. London very publicly urged Jeffries to come out of retirement to fight Johnson, for race reasons. London reported on the Johnson/Tommy Burns fight, and was so incensed by Johnson, he wanted Jeffries to "wipe that golden smile off Johnson's face." "It's up to you, Jeff," he wrote. like so many others, he couldn't accept a black champion, especially one who was proud and didn't fit stereotypes.
