Thousands of cars have broken down after drivers bought petrol from supermarket forecourts in the South of England. Trading standards officers from Norfolk to Northamptonshire and East Sussex are investigating petrol purchased at Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. Testing is taking place on samples from the affected vehicles and the forecourts. Since last week many motorists have reported their cars being sluggish and said that they were unable to rev freely — problems generally linked to fuel. The retailers confirmed that their supplies for petrol in the South East came from Greenergy, which distributes from West Thurrock, Essex.
