The idea that Jesus was God was a hotly debated question among Christian sects (now read "heretics") until the question was resolved by vote at the Council of Nicea in ( I think) the fourth century. This was when the idea of Jesus' divinity became part of the orthodox canon of beliefs. Also, by this time this emerging "school" of Christianity became the orthodoxy in following years because they had achieved SECULAR acceptance within the Roman empire and were successful in supressing all the many previous beliefs, now denounced as heretical. Gotta wonder - would have been the reaction of Jesus himself if he could have learned that years in the future he himself would be regarded as God.
