what i don't know: how can you determine if a particular guitar is braced for gut vs. steel strings? i have studied quite a few books on martin guitars but never seen any specs for the bracing bar widths/depth (only for position of the x or scalloped vs. non-scalloped shape etc.). i have read that the martin model 18 specs were changed to steel string bracing by 1923 as a standard but apparently steel was available as an option before. any ideas?
