GUEST,cardboard cutout UK: What are university folk clubs like? (48) RE: UK: What are university folk clubs like? 16 Aug 07

Reading University folk club was brilliant in the early '70s too, and run, as I remember, by Simon Mayor and Hilary James, who continue to be just as active and successful musically now. All the generation of singers you detail above came there.

Manchester University Post-Grad folk club circa 1975 was good too, but mainly booked more regional guests - Mike Harding, Bernard Wrigley, Bob Williamson - booked by my (now)husband and myself.

A generation on in 2001, Exeter Uni. was mostly into folk dance - well it was until my daughter and her friends arrived, anyway!

Then again, I wouldn't have touched IVDVF with a bargepole in my day, but it is quite acceptable these days.

I guess Sheffield Uni. is currently fairly robust in traditional music terms, I don't know about other universities though.
