I happened to hear Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas the other day, followed shortly by White Christmas. The two songs are quite similar - somewhat sentimental, written about the same time (1943 and 1942, respectively) for movies (Meet Me in St. Louis and Holiday Inn)and performed by very popular singers (Judy Garland and Bing Crosby). I've heard them all my life. I've always liked Have Yourself, never felt much one way or the other about White. But hearing them in close proximity really accentuated their differences for me. If I hadn't been in a public place, with no control over the sound system, I would have turned White Christmas off in mid chorus. Crosby sounded painfully lugubrious compared to Garland, then at the height of her powers. Anyone else have a similar reaction? Or perhaps a completely opposite one?
