In the movie "Eastern Promises" there are scenes explaining that in the Russian mafia that tattoos are a way of showing your criminal history to the world. For instence a church on your back shows you've been in prison - the number of spires on the church shows how many times you've been there. Very interesting movie. I'm not trying to compare tatoos to criminal activity however.
