It seems like the remaining supernatural influences in North American folklore may be left behind for the purpose of scaring folks. Fear is not often dealt with in song but Rosalie Sorrells' recording of The Haunted Hunter combines both. While I think that it was found as a printed broadside in Canada, it would be interesting to hear more info about it. Other instances of folk material used to convey fear that come to mind are The Lonesome Roving Wolves, The Texas Rangers and all those camp stories designed to frighten young summer campers; many of which use supernatural themes.
