For me, the issue is not really guns. but the "Make my day" sort of thinking that allows people to move easily into verbal and then physical violence when they don't care for what they see or hear. Pardon me for bluntness here, but it seems that Americans, whether for or against gun control, often seem ready and willing to make this jump.
