As a Wolf Cub (Cub Scouts, these days) we sang this as a round with the "monkey, monkey" repeated until the song finished (or your group repeated).
As for 'monk' or 'monkey' we sang 'monkey' but as two distinct and seperated sylables.
That was about 1965/6.
