As a small boy growing up in Wisconsin in the 1930s, my dad used to sing it to me. He sang it: I went to the animal fair, the birds and the beasts were there, The old baboon, by the light of the moon, was combing his auburn hair. The monkey, he got drunk, sat down on the elephant's trunk; Th elephant sneezed, fell down on his knees and that was the end of the monk, the monk, the monk.
