Many of those songs we sang in music lessons in the 50s were foreign translations, Marianina (Italian I think), Red rose, Paul's Little Hen (Norwegian). I have the original booklets somewhere, produced by the BBC for 'Singing Together' programmes. Once there was a wild rose gay on the moorland growing, But a careless boy at play chanced to see the tempting spray On the moorland gro-o-owing Soft red rose, red rose so gay, on the moorla-and gro-o-owing.
