Sometimes they were spot on, sometimes they pursued targets that just weren't all that important. Besides the ones you mentioned, they also spoofed 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, Alabama governor Lurleen Wallace, Texas political scandal figure Billy Sol Estes, even actress Elizabeth Taylor, and all of those songs are now dated and will never be sung again. Methinks the trio needed a tighter focus for their satire. Still, while known for their wit, I think the CMT presented one other thing that is seldom found in folk music: the singers played no instruments, at least not until John Denver replaced Chad and became the fifth member of the trio. Just three guys in suits and ties singing their heads off, while someone else (at one time Jim "Roger" McGuinn of the Byrds) did the accompaniment. It was nice to see good singers succeed, whether or not they knew how to strum or pluck. The world doesn't need any more bad guitarists.
