Phil Ochs took a famous poem---the epic ballad, The Highwayman, and wrote a melody for the narrative The way Phil did it, he took out some verses and re-wrote a bit so that it would work with his tune. Phil recorded it in the 60s. Years later others would be attracted to Phil's version. Katy Moffatt, and Steve Gillette (on a Phil Ochs tribute album I produced--What's That I Hear? The Songs Of Phil Ochs--Sliced Bread Records. Recently, Canadian singer-harper, Loreena McKennitt took the same poem and set it to her own tune. A beautiful perfomance and using more of the original poem than Phil's edited version. Let's not confuse that with Jimmy Webb's great song, The Highwayman, which was recorded by Willie and Waylon, Kris and Cash. This is a whole different Highwayman--but one hell of a great song. I love em all.
