Generally, the colour is all down to the varnish, not the wood. Most good fiddles have spruce for the belly and maple for the back, so it's up to the maker what colour the finished article turns out. My father tended towards the darker colours with his varnish and I lke them that way, too. A good set-up is more important than anything else to get the best sound. Have fun, Jane. |
