kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Vaughan Williams Day / Cecil Sharp House (58* d) RE: Vaughan Williams Day / Cecil Sharp House 08 Oct 08

A voice from the USA here- is that allowed? Once, during my Fulbright Year in Great Britain, Maud Karpeles took us (myself and husband George Pickow) to the Vaughn Williams home to do a short recording of VW's voice introducing the record made at that years' album of music from the Biarritz/Pamplona Festival of World Folklore (or similar title). I had always admired and appreciated Ralph Vaugh Williams' music, for his delicate use of the old song tunes in his work, so I had begged to go along.

He Himself received us warmly, and George recorded from him his fine introductory sentence. On listening to himself, he beamed and said, "There, I DO sound like Winston Churchill, don't I?" Then, tea was served, and Maud insisted that I sing for Mr. Churchill. He at once held up his ear trumpet, and I sang a verse or so of, "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies," for which he thanked me, and applauded. And I could have punched George, because he did NOT take that picture-for fear of embarrassing Vaughn Williams. But wouldn't it have been great to have that photo?

However, George did do a farewell photo of us. If you'd like to see it, go to www.jeanritchie.com, scroll down to about the seventh caption on the Homepage, Visit The Photo Gallery Page". Click on that, and at the top, left to right it's the third photo. L.to R., myself, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Ursula, and Maud Karpeles. That day is a lovely memory to have.
