GUEST,Erin Help: Those three notes!.. (3) Those three notes!.. 23 Jun 00

Hi, I'm learning to play the whistle. There is a three-note ornamentation that I've noticed in countless Irish and Scottish songs (the first to come to mind being "Drowsy Maggie"). I've seen people play it, and know that the actual notes differ depending on the tune it's in, but the effect is the same. Played well, one person playing can make it sound as if for those three notes they're joined by a second instrument. I've heard it done on whistle, fiddle, pipes, and even lilting. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there's an actual name for this ornamentation, and maybe explain how you know what notes to use for it in any given tune. Thanks, ~Erin
