BBC website has some clips of Sting talking about and playing the Lute. One part of the discussion made me blink - was John Dowland the first singer-songwriter? Interested to hear some more expert views on what he's saying. I note the lutes in question have a lot of non-fretted sympathetic strings. My mental picture of a lute (from Julian Bream etc) is a much smaller instrument. Of course its clearly not England's national instrument as it originates from the Middle East....
