I can remember the infamous Freemason's Club in Coventry (1980's) that had 2 pool tables in the bar that we used for the club. No problem, we just got some plywood covers made which were put on top, and they were pushed to one side. Instant place to put beer glasses and everyone was happy. Don't forget that the landlord has to have a viable pub for the other 6 nights of the week when the club is not there. Be pragmatic and work with them (unless you can find another folk-friendly pub elsewhere of course). Or move the 'big' nights elsewhere if there is not enough room in the existing venue. I lament the changes to the pub trade as much as anyone, but remember that pubs are closing down at a rate of knots, so the alternative to the pool tables may just be NO PUB!!
