I had always thought the inscription on Guthrie's guitar (picture) that I have quoted in the thread title was not meant verbatim.

But after reading this

A Hungarian tourist who killed a 69-year-old gay man with a banjo after he made homosexual advances was found guilty of manslaughter ... by beating him with a banjo and ramming the handle down his throat (link to article)

I can think of a different interpretation.
