The Eric Bogle song you referred to is called "As If He Knows" about the horses of the Australian Light Horse in the Middle East in WWI being destroyed because it was feared they would bring disease back to Australia (not the general's horse, of course, that was obviously disease free!) Each man shot the horse of his best friend so no-one had to kill their own horse.
The old soldier Eric got the idea for the song from could not remember the names of most of his mates but remembered the name of his horse - Banjo.

I find it difficult to even write about the song - never mind sing it.
