My grandfather used to recite the lyrics to this as well as THE MOUNTAINEER AND THE JABBERWOCK, he didn't know who wrote it, and he never sang it so I was never sure if it was a song or a poem. It is interesting to see so many other people that have a history with this piece. It has been good to find and I have listened to a couple of the recordings the best is probably the link posted by Bully, the Dr. Demento version is much harder to hear and understand. As for the mountaineer and the jabberwock I now have it on 45 on the reverse of "the thing"
