Not many Chinese places around where I live that play "suitable ethnic music in the appropriate language"! Most of it seems to be Chino-pop as bad as the 'Western' variety. However, at least it is usually played rather quietly whereas I often have to ask them to turn the music down in other places. I've even left the occasional restaurant because the noise was unbearable (to my rather un-modern ears ...)

Can't tell you why German restaurants favour rock (or loud MoR) music, Conrad, but I agree that most do. And those who don't play German pop music that features lyrics of the 'dumb and dumber' variety. I'd give a lot to find a restaurant that plays no music at all!
