Since the Aussies are outlawing incandescent bulbs, there should be lots of "formerly stylish" lamps and fixtures at the yard sales there - soon if not now. The distance between yards might make shopping inconvenient in many areas, but ... ... There's an election or two between now and the prospect of outlawing becoming a "fact". That aside, the events that you call "yard sales" (which we call "Garage sales") are called "lawn sales" in Alice Springs and there's a thriving exchange between to 'real' locals and those from the US who work at Pine Gap. Pine Gap is one of those satellite spy places where "everything is secret" and the US flies in thumping great Starlifters with all the domestic clobber for its workers. Many can't be bothered taking their stuff 'back home' so it appears in lawn sales in Alice Springs. I'm sure that the US spirit of enterprise ought to be able to work a thriving exchange of goodies, but you'd have to cope with the fact that our electrics are all 240 volts at 50Hz and the plugs (and sockets) have the active and return prongs angled both to each other and the earth prong. Best of luck! Cheers, Rowan
